The new millennium has brought many advances in dental ceramics. High strength ceramics have evolved to the point that predictable clinical success has been documented for several systems especially in the anterior region. Clinical success for high stress posterior areas or for posterior fixed partial dentures has been less predictable and minimally documented. Newer ceramics with mono-phase ceramic core systems have the potential to be used predictably in the posterior region for single crowns and for 3 unit fixed partial dentures. This presentation will cover these new ceramic systems designed for anterior / posterior use. Microstructural differences between ceramic systems and critical material & processing issues that effects fracture potential will be discussed. Clinical & laboratory guidelines (including cementation procedures) along with esthetic enhancements for the use of these ceramics for crowns and fixed partial dentures will be detailed in length.
