Description

Titration of preventive measures for the individual patient reflects their diet, lifestyle and other caries risk factors. All these parameters change over time, making it possible for clinicians to miss warning signs (leading to under-prevention or supervised neglect), or to overtreat the patient by applying far more preventive measures than are needed or beneficial. This session explores the “when” and then the “how” of caries prevention, unpacking the flags clinicians can identify that signal the “when”, and explaining rational decision making around products that can be used in the dental clinic, and recommended for use at home. With a bewildering array of products in caries prevention space, advice is also given around how best to use proven technologies to best effect. The final part of the presentation navigates the turbulent water of dealing with marketing hype, by jargon-busting and fact-checking claims, and revealing copycat products where the imitation product is inferior.
