Description

Our understanding of oral mucosal disease is constantly changing and this can impact on our advice to patients and recommendations for treatment. This lecture series outlines these changes and is presented to enhance understanding of common oral mucosal disorders for the general dental practitioner. The use of web delivery allows for whole articles being available for review, which will cover aspects of oral recurrent aphthous ulcerative disease, dermatological diseases with oral presentations, principally lichen planus, oral mucosal dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma.

PART 1:
Title: An update on Oral Mucosal Conditions – 1 (and a few “urban myths”)
This presentation will review common oral mucosal conditions discuss presentation and potential treatment options. Specifically, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, oral candidosis, intra-oral HPV and oral viral diseases will be presented. Several “urban myths” will be discussed that have been associated with these diseases.

PART 2:
Title: Medications used in dentistry: indications and interactions (and a few more “urban myths”)
This talk will be focused on medications used in dentistry, their indications, interactions, and adverse reactions. Recent controversies and common problems in prescribing will be discussed. Several further “urban myths” will be discussed that have been associated with the use of particular medications.

PART 3:
Title: An update on Oral Mucosal Conditions – 2: Oral Cancer
This talk will outline presenting features and diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma and potentially malignant oral mucosal changes. The aetiology of oral cancer, clinical tools that may aid in the early recognition of these conditions and recent evidence an aetiological role for both common oral hygiene practices and sexually transmitted diseases will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of these lectures, participants should have significantly updated their knowledge of oral mucosal disorders as they affect the general dental practitioner.

Biography
Michael McCullough is the Professor in Oral Medicine at the Melbourne Dental School, the University of Melbourne. He is the convenor of both the postgraduate and undergraduate courses in Oral Medicine, has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, was on the Expert Panel for the recently published Therapeutic Guidelines book titled “Oral and Dental”, is the Chair of the ADA’s Therapeutics Committee and is on the Editorial board and writes the “Dental Comments” for the Australian Prescriber. Michael is an Oral Medicine Clinical Consultant to the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
